G4, no manual for the bios, can't boot on any legacy usb storage device

  • Hi,

I bought the mini pc a week or so ago, I was pretty happy with it so far, the silence and absence of heating: a life changing experience really. But I noticed two absolutely jarring things:

    • It takes it several seconds to latch onto GRUB, the boot loader on my SATA legacy disk.
    • I tried several times to boot on usb sticks, including some that work on other PCs and up until now it won't boot on any.

I stress that it is the case with the default settings. Unless there is a simple fix (that doesn't involve flashing the bios, please...) then it absolutely contradicts the "compatible with linux" label. But the simplest feature (booting) doesn't meet expectation is grating to say the least. I used the following image, with the absolutely standard "dd" command.

  • I was able to boot from USB on the G4. Otherwise it would be difficult to install a different OS?
